EPISODE 12:
Modern Parenting 101: Non-Traditional Parenting – Why It’s NOT a Bad Thing
Parenting outside of the traditional family is often seen as a negative thing, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be.
According to a Pew Research survey, 40% of today’s kids are raised outside of the traditional family structure. While some people might point to this fact as evidence of why society is going downhill, this episode will show you that that is just not the case.
As a child psychologist who has worked with families of all different kinds, I can tell you with great certainty that it’s not WHAT your family looks like; it’s HOW you parent that makes all the difference.
And what do I mean by functional?
In my experience, the goal of most families is to create an environment that is positive and supportive where everyone in the family feels free to pursue their natural talents and interests.
When you’re listening to this episode, you’ll feel encouraged knowing that non-traditional families can be just as functional as traditional ones. We’ll talk about what being a non-traditional family means, why it isn’t a negative thing, and the habits that need to be present for any family to work.
Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll learn in this episode:
- [06:02] I break down what it really means to be a “successful family”. Having a successful family isn’t based on how cute your kids look on Instagram, how big your house it, or how many extra-curricular activities your child participates in. The definition of a successful Modern Family involves a lot more depth.
- [07:47] I break down the definition of a non-traditional family and show you that the stigma associated with being non-traditional takes a HUGE toll on families – but we CAN do something about it!
- [08:18] I talk about why some people think that non-traditional parenting can’t work, and I provide reasons why it does work.
- [14:55] Any family type CAN be successful – if they use all of the elements of a successful family. In this part of the episode, I list the 4 elements that I believe families need in order to have a family that is happy, healthy, and feels free to pursue their natural talents and interests.
Whether your family type is a traditional or non-traditional one, after listening to this episode, you’ll know what it takes to raise happy, motivated, moral, and interesting young adults – and you’ll find personal enjoyment in the process to boot!
